Ecomapping

Ecomapping is a free online visual tool that helps small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to analyse and manage environmental behaviour. It is also a useful tool for larger businesses.

Developed by European environmental champion Heinz-Werner Engel, Ecomapping is an easy, cost-effective way for you to meet your company’s environmental obligations and become more eco-efficient.

Ecomapping is a step-by-step process that involves making ‘mud maps’ of your company’s:

  • Water consumption
  • Waste
  • Noise and Air emissions
  • Soil contamination
  • Environmental risks

From this, you can develop a broader environmental management system. While some tasks are undertaken in the office, most involve engagement with staff on the ‘shop floor’. To be successful, Ecomapping requires the commitment of management and the involvement of all employees (and don’t forget to take ‘before and after’ photos of areas that you are targeting for improvement; this is a great way to celebrate achievements with your staff).

The Ecomapping Toolkit enables you to develop an Environmental Management System which can be expanded to meet ISO 14001.
